How to Be Better at Self-Care

Updated: Oct 14

Drop by drop, the time you invest in self-care adds up and eventually overflows, spilling into every aspect of your life. Learn how to be better at self-care by successfully starting and maintaining your own self-care practice.

“The jug fills drop by drop.” —Buddha

Visualize a big bucket. Really see its color, size, shape, texture and depth. Now imagine that this bucket isn’t for water. It’s for self-care. This bucket collect drops of the self-care that you practice in your own life. Every self-care practice counts as a single drop in the bucket.

The secret to practicing self-care is to start small. Begin with one drop. A drop of:

  • Exercise

  • Sleeping 7 to 9 hours a night

  • Meditation

  • Journaling

  • Reading something inspirational

  • Listening to a high-vibe podcast

  • Eating mindfully

  • Drinking enough water to stay hydrated

  • Listening to your body’s needs

  • Saying “no” to the things that don’t serve you

  • Choosing kindness toward yourself

  • Setting clear boundaries

These are all self-care practices that count as drops in your bucket.

Eventually, these drops of self-care collect into a larger sea of self-care inside the bucket. As the bucket collects more self-care drops than it can hold, it begins to overflow, spilling love, patience, kindness, compassion and wellness—all the things you have given yourself that you now have the energy, time and space to share with others in your life.

When your bucket begins to overflow, you'll know. You’ll feel it. Your spirit will feel lighter. You’ll smile because you can. You’ll find yourself singing more, even swaying your hips like seaweed in wavy water as you listen to your favorite song. This is when you can give from a place of abundance. And people will notice.

Practice It: Be Better at Self-Care by Building Your Self-Care Bucket

It takes time to build your self-care bucket, so give yourself the time to do it. Your bucket will need continuous replenishment. Because your mind, body and sprit need continuous nourishment. Self-care is the fuel that will light you up.

Drop by drop, you can collect the self-care you deserve.
