Keep your ojas (vital energy reserve) well-nourished with these Ayurvedic self-care tips.
Do you want skin that glows and eyes that sparkle? You need more ojas—our vital energy reserve that supports immunity, mood, strength, resiliency and digestion.
In a society that values overachievement, we often overwork ourselves to the brink of depletion. With this lifestyle, we not only exhaust our bodies and minds, but also our ojas.
Think of ojas as your deep radiance and vigor. Low ojas can show up as not being able to manage stress, sleeping too much or too little, dry skin, low energy and poor digestion.
The goal: Keep your ojas well-nourished. Protect it; don’t deplete it. Building your ojas means nourishing yourself.
Ojas is one of the three subtle essences in Ayurveda and is the essence of water. It holds, contains and nourishes. Having proper ojas supports resiliency and gives us patience, peace, contentment and a feeling of calm.
The other two subtle essences—prana and tejas—together with ojas promote sattva (ease, harmony and balance).
Prana moves all things and is the essence of air, responsible for coordination of breath, sense and the mind. It helps us maintain emotional harmony, balance and creativity. Tejas is inner radiance and the essence of fire, which allows us to perceive and judge correctly, and gives us courage.
Ojas-Building Self-Care Practices
Below are a few keys ways to build your ojas.
Practice Abhyanga (self-massage with oil). The Sanskrit word for “oil” is sneha, which also means “love.” Abhyanga is the ultimate self-love self-care practice, and one of my favorites. Practicing it at least a few times a week can be deeply nourishing.
Walk in nature and spend time outdoors regularly.
Spend time in silence.
